Read an article on the 109th Airlift Wing and their mission by Major Stephen Fifield - one of the pilots.
|In 1998, I had expressed to a member of the 109th Airlift Wing, New York Air National Guard, the desire to visit the "seventh continent". See, the 109th has the icecap airlift mission, and I saw them as my only opportunity to ever visit Antarctica. In the Spring of 1999, Lt Col Paul Sheppard called me on the phone to tell me that this would be the first year the 109th would be using ops augmentees, and to ask me if I would like to be the first to volunteer. I jumped at the chance. What follows are some photos of my experiences there, and the stories behind them.|
